Karma Bar - Koh Lipe - Thailand |
travel information |
HOW TO GET TO US Bangkok To get back to the airport or train station simply hire any taxi. Bangkok traffic can be horrendous so allow yourself plenty of time. There are also airport buses in various areas. Book a flight or a train ticket on-line or at one of the many travel agents in and around Bangkok. The nearest town to us with an airport as well as a train station is Hat Yai. Taxis are one of the more conventional means of travel around Thailand cities. Tuk-tuks can be fun and adventurous and a great way to see the sights. Motorcycle taxis are the quickest, cheapest and craziest way to travel. Hat Yai is the closest city to us and where you will need to get a taxi/mini-bus to Pak Barra where you will catch the boat to Koh Lipe.
Hat
Yai There is a mini-bus station in front of the train station which should cost about 80-100 baht; however, the driver waits until the bus is full which could delay your departure. Wait to buy ferry tickets from the pier in Pak Barra rather than from touts in Hat Yai or from the mini-bus operator. The taxi journey is about 2 1⁄2 hours, by mini-bus it's slightly longer. It should cost about 200 baht by taxi to get to HatYai city center should you like to stay there. HatYai has great markets, shopping, hospital, internet, and some fantastic restaurants, like The Swan, just up the road from the Kings Hotel. |
TO KOH LIPE FROM PAKBARRA Pak
Barra Pak Barra is a very sleepy town with limited guesthouses and very few restaurants or bars, so if you do not wish to stay there you should plan so that your taxi arrives with plenty of time to spare for the boats. The boat schedule can be found here Pak Barra is best reached by mini-bus from HatYai though you could come via Trang if traveling from Phuket. Both have airports and a train station from Bangkok.
Koh Lipe Important: The Chao Lay community on Koh Lipe are independent from the ferry operators. Since there is no pier on Koh Lipe you will have to pay them a small fee of usually around 50 baht for them to ferry you in their Longtail boats to the island. Mountain Resort has private drivers so look for their blue awnings on the boats or ask any of the available longtails to be taken to Mountain Resort. Check out the Koh Lipe website for boat schedules and more information and on-line booking. |
